Four Seasons table "Fall" |

| I'll make working drawings to plan a new piece or to document an interesting antique, but the freehand and thumbnail sketches are where the interesting things happen. I taught figure drawing for 10 years, and when I was painting a lot I drew from nature. I think this experience comes through in the sketches: the proportion and character of the body, the vibration and chaos of nature, and sets up a struggle between furniture dreams and the realities of the workshop. I remember a photograph in one of James Krenov's' books. There was a tiny sketch sitting on his workbench of the piece he was working on. That was all he needed to keep the image in his head as he worked. |
